Clarity – Shocked

I am really surprised at times with the clarity that appears to be happening in Tyler’s mind. I have recently learned, all those years and times I didn’t think he was paying attention, or absorbing or enjoying he was – it is just stored in his brain file cabinet and some is starting to come out.
I mentioned not too long ago about his out of the blue statement regarding the aquarium (we went there on his birthday 5 years ago and he never mentioned anything about it)
Well Tyler has seen something on Youtube – Totally Thomas Town is what he calls it, it appears to be a Thomas store. Well – we were driving over the bridge last week and Tyler asks me – where is Totally Thomas Town? I told him, I don’t know and he responds “it’s by the aquarium” and I said “what?” he repeated that and I had to think for a minute and I said well yes, there is a store by the Aquarium that sells lots of Thomas items. (I was in complete SHOCK at what I heard and the connection he made)

1) The bridge we were going over was the way to get to the Aquarium (the restaurant)
2) There is a store that sells Thomas items – which is what he remembers
3) We have been back to the area (but not the restaurant or the Thomas store)
4) It’s been 5 years since we were at The Aquarium and he’s NEVER mentioned that Thomas store until we drove over the bridge the other day (and we’ve driven over that bridge several times in the last 5 years)

I keep getting amazed daily as to the clarity in his brain. He’s making a statement and asking questions about something that happened about 5 years ago and he’s never mentioned it before! I didn’t even realize HOW MUCH information he absorbed that day!

I am so curious as to what is truly in his mind.

Tyler’s Conversation and Interaction with his Doctor 5-16-18

Tyler went to the doctor for a possible jammed toe big toe.

1. Pain in toe since Saturday (no bruising, no redness, no swelling very bendable)

2. Tyler response to how it happened “I hit it on my bed” to me and to his sister “stung by a bee” (several years ago, Tyler did have a toe injury that was caused by stepping on a bee)

3. I need to see the doctor. I waited a few days and each day he asked, so I scheduled an appt.

4. In the preliminary information, Tyler revealed to the nurse taking the notes that his pain was on his left big toe. (I can not express how proud I was) Dr. walks in, Ok Tyler let me see this little toe that is hurting.

5. Dr. S it’s my big toe not my little toe (she smiled so big and I must’ve looked like a deer in the headlights)

6. When I was talking to the doctor and I said he has not described the level of pain it’s either a 1 or a 10 most of the time – Tyler (with earbuds in his ears watching his Thomas video) interrupted our conversation and said “pain is a 2 Dr. S and Mom”(I was in SHOCK – we’ve been working on pain levels for what seems like forever (really about a year) and it’s usually a 1, 8 or 10 for him to actually recognize a pain on a level other than “no pain or extreme pain” is such progress I wanted to jump up and down for joy in the office LOL – it’s the little things so maybe we are on the right track with all this pain level work)

7. I told Dr. S that this wasn’t going to begin to heal until she could give us a solution (LOVE THIS DR’S OFFICE).

8. She thoroughly examined the toe – interacting with Tyler, the pain went from the entire big toe, to just the joint on the big toe once she asked him to “point to the pain”
9. She asked me what do you usually give for pain or inflammation mom? I said Epsom bath soaks and certain oils, if the discomfort seems to be interfering with things then some Ibuprofen (but as little as possible).

10. Ok Mom, since the pain level is at a 2, I don’t want to expose him to radiation at this moment. If we can avoid the Ibuprofen since it all goes through the liver, let’s do that. How about some Epsom Salts soaks and what oils do you have and I mentioned things that could help allievate discomfort could be Cool Azul Cream, Cool Azul Oil or Pan Away oil.

11. Ok Tyler, let mom soak your toe in Epsom Salt then let her choose an oil to rub on your toe and see if things feel better after a few days.

12. Tyler, Ok Dr. S I will.

Dr. S – if things don’t improve then come back and we will discuss x-rays and other things.

This office has seen all the progress and improvements with Tyler. He’s been going to this office for about 13 years now. They are very pleased and try not to disrupt the regimen if possible because sometimes it’s just hard to believe where he was and where he is today.

It’s the baby steps that brings the excitement with the work you put into things.

Mother’s Day 2018

Oh my heart is so full. Tyler got these beads last week at school.

This morning he came to me:

T: “May 13 is Mother’s Day”
M: “yes it is”

Then he pulls these beads from behind his back & says:

T: “i want you to have these”
M: “Thank you Tyler but these are yours”
T: “i want you to give them to you”
M: “thank you, what a wonderful gift, I love it”
T: “i love you mom”
Tyler walks away.

So much in this moment. Feelings & emotions, voluntary giving up his possession, recognizing & understanding a recognition day, appropriate & accurate conversation, unprompted.

Something so small is so powerful

He made a decision for his IEP and Morning Structured routines 4-30-18

This morning I was sitting back reflecting our morning routines and school routines. Since Tyler was little, I always tried to have some sort of routine that somewhat stays in place year round (it changes as things change in our lives).
You can look back through blog posts that will talk about routines and our morning routines. Example (when he was in PPCD and 1st grade – I used to have him write on this lunch sack, his name and the date – this to help with calendar skills and handwriting skills)

Fast forward to the present and so amazed at his progress:
School routine – I wake him up between 515a and 530a (I think like most people he needs time to “wake up” before we are out the door at 615a (tues-fri as we have therapy on Monday mornings). I have laid out for him, his morning vitamin regimen with his ningxia red drink and a banana. His lunch is made and in the refrigerator and his breakfast is made and sitting on the counter.

Most of the time he tends to his responsibilities without much prompting from me. – to get up within 10-15 minutes after I start waking him up. (he does). He selects his own clothes and gets dressed. Washes his face and brushes teeth (this is a little bit more of a struggle, at night 0 problems, mornings are a struggle LOL – I will take what I can get). He eats his banana and takes his all his vitamins and drinks his Ningxia Red. He gets his lunch box and puts in his backpack. He gets a lunch sack and packs up his breakfast and puts in his backpack. He puts his backpack in the living room along with his school ID and his headphones, he then goes to his room for his youtube time LOL, he here’s the alarm on my phone at 615a and asks me “Mom are you ready to go” –
This progress is so amazing. I don’t want to constantly be nagging him about what to do in the mornings (no one likes to be nagged much less in the mornings BUT you have to keep focused on a morning routine). Some days he asks for calming oils and other days he does not.

He functions better with a structured routine (common for AU individuals) but the fact that he can do all this in the morning without prompts from me is so much progress. I want him to be as independent as possible in our home. I will be incorporating additional things next year (or I hope too LOL)

NEXT – big big big deal!!!! Tyler will be starting vocations next year instead of in the 11th grade (this is a new pilot program to make the transition for vocations training in the 11th grade a little smoother – and Tyler has been selected to be a part of it. Since most know I am all about life functions and let the academics fall where they may – this made me very happy and proud for his selection – his behavior also had a lot to do with being selected)

He can only have 1 elective since he will be doing this vocation and so there has to be a choice between PE and Art. His teacher sent me a message and said that he was struggling to make this decision – sooooo I worked on this over the weekend. He wanted to do both (not fully understanding what the vocations meant)

Over the past couple of days (not all at once as he has to have time to process what I am telling him – when he starts verbal stimming and I know I need to stop and let him process) I first explained that 9th grade would be ending in May. That we have ESY in June and that 10th grade starts in August. That in 10th grade he can have Art or PE but not both. One of his new things is saying “I am curious as to……” So he asked me, I am curious why I can’t do both and what is vocations. So I briefly told him there is not enough time to do both, that he’s growing up and learning new things and has to pick 1. He went back and forth on Art and PE and saying he can’t decide. He also said I AM ANXIOUS. I told him it’s hard to make decisions sometimes but I want HIM to make this decision. So he would decide, then I would come back later and ask again. I waited until I got 3 same response answers before I secured the fact of which class he decided to take. I tried using the number scale, that didn’t work LOL. I tried asking which one makes you happy (they both make him happy) so I told him, then you have to pick 1, so Art it shall be! We go to our revision ARD on Friday – to make revisions for the new vocations program and to remove Adaptive PE from his electives. I reassured him it’s all good (as Pete the Cat would say) and that this is part of growing up – we have to make changes and that I will be here to help him and so will the teachers and that I know he can do this!

Seasonal discomforts 4-29-18

Alternating mixtures for Tyler’s extreme seasonal discomforts. Have Claritin on standby, but the more days without chemicals the better. For years Tyler took OTC or prescription meds for nasal & respiratory issues 365 days a year.  June of 2018 he will be 2 years free of these daily items.  Now we manage with essential oils,  quality vitamin & minerals & now and then a Claritin.  #yleo #chemicalfreeliving #seasonaldiscomforts #oilyspectrum #nomore365daysofchemicals #Godisgood
