Happy July 4th

So much rain here today – not going out for gatherings (even though he was prepared) IF the rain stops and the roads aren’t flooded, we will attempt fireworks (we have 2 locations close to home and possible to watch from the vehicle or indoors to help with the sound (and of course noise cancelling headphones)

But my silly guys wanted to wear with July 4th great today – no matter what!

Money & Memory

When the memory really starts coming about – but yesterday – oh my my a couple of things.

1) Money, counting, understanding, earning are very high priorities in many of the things I teach Tyler. This is always in his IEP math goals and has been since elementary school.
Now Tyler knows how to count – so adding the #’s of money together isn’t the issue. Adding coins to bills is and adding coins to coins is also an issue.
Yesterday he was counting out his money to see if he had saved enough to buy a train and without any prompting from me he counted his bills and then said “now let’s add some coins” THEN he mixed it up he didn’t just add quarters (to make a $1.00) he actually added various coins and without prompting ADDED THE COINS TO THE BILLS! I can’t tell you what a massive step this is! His new/used train will be there by the 7th!
2) That Memory Bank of his is working strongly – see that wagon in the picture? We were driving down the road and there was a wagon in a driveway that looked just like this and Tyler says:  “Mom pulls baby Tyler in the green basket with wheels in 2004” I can’t tell you how puzzled I was. I always have to stop and think and I was yes that is correct. He says “I remember” and I am thinking to myself you were 2 – are you sure your remember (I didn’t say it but I thought it) and then I told him, the basket is called a “wagon” and not all wagons are red. I said what else do you remember about that wagon. He said, pulled around in the street and the grass and around the trees. I am just in SHOCK at this point. I said yes. I said, there is a picture on my computer of this wagon, when we get home, I will show it to you. So I pulled up this picture and he said “yes that is the green basket with wheels, I mean wagon” I said do you remember what else you used to do in that wagon? I could see his mind thinking and I said, do you remember this wagon being on the ramp? Tyler “Yes, roll down the ramp into the fence and tree” WOW – he was right! Now we had this wagon for years – so many of these memories are ones from several years. But it is amazing how seeing 1 thing, triggered memories and he was able to speak of those memories (all appropriately and accurately). I remember reading about Temple Grandin’s words “Thinking in Pictures” and I know not everyone on the spectrum is a massive visual learner and thinker, but I’ve known for a while that Tyler is and when she discusses how seeing or hearing something, can trigger a file cabinet of stored pictures and memories, I am seeing this in action more and more each day!

I am just amazed at what information keeps coming from him. Things that are starting to click. Don’t ever give up. Just be patient, be repetitive, be supportive and go at their pace.
I give all the glory to God and I am grateful that Young Living products came into our lives. Detoxing our home, our bodies and trying to maintain chemical free living and utilizing natural methods seems to be helping so much!

The “year” memory continues to improve

Ok – This memory thing with Tyler and “years” is really puzzling me – how in the world does he remember the years LOL.

Back when he was in the 7th grade, Ms. Washington told me that Tyler loved their reading chair – so I got him one for Christmas – here was yesterday’s conversation
Tyler: “I love this chair (as he’s sitting in the chair) Santa brought it to me in 2015”
Me: (after having to think back lol) “yes he did”
Tyler: “In 2015 in Ms. Washington’s class I sat in her chair and it broke (which it did)
Me: “Tyler that is correct, how you remember that year?”
Tyler: Chuckling and walks off.
I can ask him about a year and he can’t (or won’t) respond, but he can pop out with these statements outta no where (and I have to really think back long and hard to the years LOL)

New connection – I am just blown away at what he’s figuring out and what he remembers – who knew?

I am starting to wonder if Tyler’s teacher shared with him the “years” he went to JR, Baker, Lomax etc (because he can remember things he’s told) – he still has difficulty in calendar concepts yet, he knows the years he attended JR, BKR, LMX and 9th grade – I have to stop and think about and he’s right. He can count money but doesn’t have the concept of money, nor getting change and financial things He can tell time (both analog and digital) but doesn’t have the concept of time. How did he figure out the years – the more he pops out with stuff, the more I am baffled. (his new “connection” of things is years) – my curiosity is getting the best of me, sent a message to his teacher LOL.

She said that she may have mentioned dates in social conversation but it was not a lesson plan and something discussed with a required outcome. She say she gives credit to Tyler to figuring this out! She said great job Tyler!

I am puzzled – really puzzled

OK – I am stumped beyond stumped! We passed the Aquarium today during Sailing Angels and Tyler mentioned it more than once and as we were returning to the harbor he says to me, that’s my birthday in 2013. I said you are correct (my mind is PUZZLED because all I’ve ever said is that his birthday was in the 5th grade (5 years ago) – yes he does know how to subtract but we are still working on calendar comprehension. Anyway we get home – and Tyler brings his 2 aquarium cars, his Kindle with a movie dated 2013 and says to me, The aquarium for my birthday in 2013 (pointing first to the train cars then to the movie) and my sister Tori and good friend Ms. Tammy was there and we touched the stingrays. It was a good birthday – he walks away.

I am seriously puzzled because HOW did he know it was in 2013? How? I asked him how did he know and he just looks at me like I am foolish LOL. (He has a very difficult time with who, what, when, why, where questions) but how did he know the year – seriously we are still working on yesterday, tomorrow, 2 weeks ago, 3 months from now, etc etc etc

I guess that Nemo birthday – the aquarium was a very impactive birthday – it seems like his memory bank comes alive about that birthday – again how did he know it was 2013?

He has become fascinated with “years” lately.
